Interesting Food - Sugar

Image
According to Public Health England, kids in the UK eat more than half of their recommended sugar intake - at breakfast! (The culprit?  All those sugary breakfast cereals with cartoon characters on the packaging.  (Are you listening Tony?)  What is even more worrying is that 80% of parents think sugary cereals are healthy.)

Interesting Fact - Habits

According to a study carried out by Clipper Teas, Brits are twice as likely to dump their partner, than change their brand of tea. (The top 10 things we are least likely to change are:- Our hairstyle. Our hair colour. What we eat for breakfast. Our favourite mug Our bedtime. Our favourite food brands. Our favourite takeaway restaurant. When we do our shopping. Our favourite brand of tea. The time of day we drink tea. I'd agree with 2, 3, 4, 8, 9, and 10. For the rest, I'm pretty flexible. It looks as if in the UK we like our habits and routine, but aren't that keen on our other halves.)

Interesting People - Holly Golightly

This one's for Hekner:  The heroine of Truman Capote's book Breakfast at Tiffany's, Holly Golightly, was originally christened “Connie Gustafson”. (Annotations on Capote’s type-written, hand-edited manuscript of his celebrated novella show that the heroine’s name: Holly Golightly, later famously played by Audrey Hepburn, was originally christened “Connie Gustafson”. The character was reportedly inspired by Capote’s close friendships with a series of New York society figures, including the heiress and fashion designer Gloria Vanderbilt; Oona O’Neill, daughter of the playwright Eugene O’Neill; actress Carol Grace; writer Maeve Brennan; and model Dorian Leigh, whom he nicknamed “Happy Go Lucky”. Thank goodness he changed it! No offense to any Connies or Gustafsons out there, but... )

Interesting Food - Breakfast

Image
According to a study published in the International Journal of Obesity a fried breakfast of sausages, eggs, bacon, beans, mushrooms, black pudding and tomatoes is a healthier way to start the day than a bowl of cereal. (I know you're thinking "April Fool", but the theory is that a fatty breakfast will help you stop snacking during the day and you will eat less at night.  Now where did I put that plate of bacon and eggs?)

Interesting Fact # 463 - Special K

Kellogg's Special K in the UK has 31% more sugar than Special K in the US. (That said, I am reliably informed that Special K in the US tastes like the cardboard box it comes in.)

Interesting Food - Porridge

Image
Sales of porridge and oatmeal in the UK have nearly doubled in the last five years. (According to figures, sales of porridge, a popular breakfast cereal, and oatmeal soared by 81% to £85m from 2000 to 2005. Britons ate 50,000 tonnes of oats last year.  Of course "To get one's oats" has a completely different meaning, as does "To sow one's oats" as is "to do porridge".)
