During World War I, France allegedly tried using parrots on the Eiffel Tower as an early warning system for enemy aircraft. (The experiment was abandoned because the parrots were very good at raising the alarm for approaching aircraft, but were unable to distinguish friend from foe, and they quickly grew bored.)

Being either left handed or right handed was once a trait believed to be unique to humans, but it turns out that parrots prefer to use one side of their body more than the other too.  (I wonder if we can teach them to write?!) xx Source - BBC

The Kakapo is the heaviest parrot in the world. (Sadly they are also one of the most endangered species in the world. There are only 91 known to be alive, and each one has been given a name. http://www.kcc.org.nz/birds/kakapo/names.asp)
