According to physicists at the University of Leicester a scaled up version of a spider's web, as spun by comic book hero Spiderman would be strong enough to stop a moving train. (They calculated that webbing with the following properties could stop a moving train:- The force Spider-Man's webs would have exerted on the train would be 300,000 newtons The stiffness of the web would be 3.12 gigapascals The toughness of the web would be roughly 500 megajoules per cubic metre.
