An American dime has 118 ridges around the edge, or in numismatic terms, reeds. (Seemingly the penny and nickel have no reeds (ridges), and even though they are worth less than the dime, they are larger in size. Of course British coin collectors have their own terminology, and call the reeded ridged edge, graining and the reeds (grooves) are called crenellations.)

Each successive monarch faces in a different direction on British coins. (Now I never knew that - I am now going to go and look at my coin collection.)
