Almost one in 50 children in the UK is allergic to peanuts, double the rate of ten years ago. (The innocent looking legume can cause reactions as mild as itching and redness; but in other cases, it can produce vomiting, diarrhoea and anaphylactic shock, where the throat and airways swell and become severely inflamed, preventing breathing.  You don't even need to eat a nut; peanut oil can be found in anything from processed food and sweets to cosmetics and lipstick. The condition kills more people than any other food allergy.)

In new legislation, restaurants and takeaways across Europe will be required by law to tell customers if their food contains ingredients known to trigger allergies. (The new rules also apply to meals served in bakeries, cafes, care homes and any packaged produce sold by supermarkets. Remember the nuts? Interesting Food - Nuts

Peanuts are not nuts! (Peanuts are actually a type of pea, so the health warning on a packet of peanuts (“may contain nuts”) is untrue. And people who are allergic to peanuts, are not necessarily allergic to nut nuts. Pecans, sweet chestnuts, beech nuts, acorns and hazel nuts are nuts, but almonds, brazil nuts, pistachios, cashews, horse chestnuts and pine nuts are also not nuts. Quite simply it's nuts!) Interesting Food - Cravings

According to the social network website gurgle.com, the most common craving during pregnancy for an odd combination of food is for pickles and peanut butter. (Pickles - No! Peanut Butter - No! Pickles and Peanut Butter - No! No! No!  However, as this craving was closely followed by Marmite and ice cream... Pickles and peanut butter? Yummy!)
