The red rose is one of the symbols of love on Valentine's day, but most red roses on sale in the UK for Valentine's Day (around 70%) were grown in Kenya. (Let's face it they aren't going to grow in England in this weather.) (If you ignore carbon footprints, there's not much wrong with this, it brings income to the country and provides valuable work, but, in spite of the fact that Brits pay a premium for Valentine's Day roses, many flower pickers in Kenya have to pick 120 roses per minute in order to earn their measly £1.15 a day wages. There is an answer: Have a happy Valentine's Day, and buy FairTrade.)
